Burnout is a real medical condition
Extreme work stress (aka 'burnout') is now a real medical condition.
According to the International Classification of Diseases, burnout can be officially diagnosed if they meet the following symptoms and if other disorders (e.g. anxiety, depression) have been ruled out:
1. feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
2. increased mental distance from one's job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job
3. reduced professional efficacy
Academia is a ripe environment for burnout, as its culture encourages overwork and discourages whole life integration.
